Groucho came into our rescue program on November 30, 2012. Groucho came from the Beartooth Humane Alliance in Red Lodge, Montana along with 7 other horses. Groucho, along with 64 other horses were part of a large scale animal cruelty case that Beartooth Humane Alliance worked in February 2012. Twenty six of the horses scored 3 or less on the BCS. The 26 were removed from the property and Beartooth Humane Alliance have been providing the feed and fostering for these horses since February while the investigation was pending. When the court case settled in July, the owner had 30 days to find new homes for all of her 65 horses including the horses that were seized. The owner relinquished 20 of the total to Beartooth in August for rehab and re-homing. Beartooth contacted us in October and requested our assistance. Due to the harsh winters, dried ponds, and lack of water, Beartooth wanted to place the remaining 8 horses in a rescue that would be able to continue to provide them the care, training and adoptive homes they deserved. Beartooth received our information from Stacy Segal with A.S.P.C.A. When we were first contacted, we knew we wanted to help, but didn't know if we would be able to offer them the assistance they needed. I always say, if God leads me to it, he will lead me through it. We were blessed with several adoptions, which freed up the space to allow these guys to come to us. As Beartooth states, "In what has been a tumultuous year for twenty horses surrendered to BHA after being found starved at the Rehard property in Luther, MT last February, yet another new chapter has begun - into a fairytale. A unique collaboration established between the Beartooth Humane Alliance and several nationwide horse rescue facilities will provide an opportunity for everlasting greener pastures for our horses. As the name implies, horse rescue organizations hold true to their mission of providing rehabilitation, training and re-homing for horses confiscated from cruelty cases, destined for slaughter, abandoned, or surrendered by owners unable to continue caring for their horse. Horse rescue organizations face the same challenge as dog and cat rescues and shelters face - there are just too many animals in need. BHA is thrilled to have our horses accepted into these programs knowing they will receive exceptional care and training followed by placement into caring, permanent homes." We join several other wonderful organizations that have taken on these beautiful horses, such as, Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, UT, The Horse Protection League in Golden, CO, Zuma's Rescue Ranch in Littleton, Co, The Duchess Sanctuary in Oakland, OR, and Strawberry Mountain Rescue and Rehabilitation Center, in Roseburg, OR. Sometimes, it takes a Village, regardless everyone pulled together to help some amazing horses.
