Venus is one of 17 horses that survived a horrific trailer accident on the Turner Turnpike on May 18, 2010. Venus along with 29 other horses were headed to Mexico on that horrible day, fated for slaughter. Unfortunately, 11 died instantly or had to be euthanized on scene of the wreck, 2 later died once they were transported back to the kill buyers property in Missouri. It is horrible to think that an overturned semi trailer is a blessing. But to these surviving 17 horses that horrific day is what ultimately saved their lives. These beautiful horses were given a second chance. These horses have remained in the custody of the kill buyer in Missouri until August 12th, all pictures posted are from the day of arrival into our rescue program and our Veterinary Day, which was 4 days after arrival. Thanks to HSUS for assisting us in our efforts to gain custody of these wonderful horses. It is a blessing to provide these horses a chance to be adopted and given the opportunity to be loved and someone's companion, such as many once were before being sold at a Livestock Auction in Missouri and Illinois. Many still wear their scars and wounds on them from that horrible day. Nothing about the Slaughter industry is humane. These horses not only suffered a horrible trailer wreck, but it is clear that they received little to no care while waiting at the Kill buyers to make that awful transport again. Thankfully, their horrible road to hell has ended and now we are providing them the care that they deserve, so that wonderful families can enjoy these sweet, sweet horses. It only takes a few minutes to look into these horses eyes and see the love, fear, uncertainness, and forgiveness that they have to offer. They will send you a message of thanks daily, from a simple nicker to a loving caress. Please note that the 17 horses are located in foster care. If you are interested in adopting one of these horses, please notify us, so that we can make arrangements to get that particular horse here at our facility to be seen.
Venus is a super sweet, Palomino, Quarter Horse, Mare. Venus is estimated to be 18 years of age. I think that it is important to note that Venus was sold at a Missouri Livestock Auction on April 24, 2010. She was headed to slaughter on May 18, 2010. These horses were your everyday horses, that were once part of someone's family. These are not "Unwanted" horses, these were merely horses that were sold at an auction and the highest bidder was a kill buyer. That does not label them to be dangerous or deserving to be slaughtered. These horses are unfairly judged because they were on a truck fated for slaughter. You can have the best of the best, but if you choice to sell your horse at a local livestock auction, you must know that your horse is going to end up on a truck fated for slaughter. Your auction houses are full of horses traders and kill buyers and if they pay the highest bid, that doesn't mean they were unwanted. It merely meant that their was not enough families seeking horses at that sale and the highest bid was for slaughter. For whatever reason, Venus was sold at an auction and the previous owner may have felt that she was going to receive a loving family. Whatever the reason may be, Venus suffered a great deal from the trailer wreck, but thankfully, she survived and is getting a second chance at life. She suffered a horrific accident and clearly was left untreated since the day the accident occured, until we were finally able to gain custody of these horses. Venus has a fractured/dislocated jaw, which was severly infected. She has not been able to eat since this occurred, which I assume is why she is so emaciated. We are providing her a soaked senior feed with a high fat supplement twice daily. She is able to consume the food and digest it now, since it is already soaked down. She has had her teeth floated, which is also helping her to eat. We are not able to fix her jaw, but we are getting ahead of the infection and assisting her with the appropriate diet that she needs. Venus is such a sweetheart. She loves attention and nickers at you with excitement the minute she see's you coming. She is very tolerable of everything that we have done and the doctoring that she has received. She has a heart of gold and deserves a forever, loving family that will always be their to provide her with the care and love she deserves. She has a long road of recovery ahead of her. Please consider making a donation towards Venus' rehabilitation. We will update as she progresses with her adoption status.
