Shyla

Shyla came into our rescue program on April 30, 2021. Shyla came into our rescue program from the City of Norman Animal Welfare along with 18 other horses, 12 Camels, 58 Goats, 12 Jacob Sheep, 3 Llamas, 3 Alpacas, 13 Cows and 2 Oryk as a cruelty case. This was a wide scale animal cruelty case with over 30 different types of species seized, totaling over 350 animals. Shyla is a Beautiful, Chestnut, Belgian, Mare. Shyla is estimated to be 18 years of age. Shyla is super sweet and loves attention. Shyla is in poor body condition, with a body condition score 3. Shyla has a superficial wound on the lateral aspect of the left hind pastern. She has extremely overgrown feet. The right front toe flips up and she is walking on her underrun heel, this can indicate a soft tissue injury. Shyla's blood work showed abnormal results, such as elevated total protein which can be attributed to dehydration and/or elevated globulins. Globulins were elevated which can indicate infection. A fecal egg count was performed and showed a high number of strongyle eggs present. Once we were able to work on Shyla's front feet, we discovered we were dealing with severe issues. Shyla has Canker and White Line Disease in her left front foot. We are praying we can get ahead of this. She has to be doctored daily, which means, daily doctoring and wrapping her foot, which she is not a fan of. This poor girl has a high pain tolerance, which breaks my heart. It makes you wonder what all she has been through in her life. We have Shyla on a specialized diet and she is slowly improving daily. Shyla has a long recovery ahead of her. We will update as she improves. Please consider making a donation towards Shyla's Rehabilitation.
