Clarissa

ClarissaClarissa

Clarissa came into our rescue program on June 9, 2010. Clarissa came from the Tulsa Animal Welfare Division. Clarissa is a Beautiful, Bay, Thoroughbred, Mare. She is estimated to be 5 years of age. Clarissa is very underweight, has a wound on her front right leg and her tongue is paralyzed. Clarissa was a former race horse. Our intital thought was her tongue was paralyzed due to being tongue tied while being raced, however, we don't see any obvious markings or injuries to her tongue that would support that theory. Clarissa has suffered some form of nerve damage to her tongue. The entire left side of her tongue is paralyzed and very hard, which causes the right side to contract and it just hangs out the side of her mouth. We are now trying to determine if she may have EPM. We are currently trying some steroids to see if we will be able to relax her tongue and give her control of it again. If not, our only other option will be to amputate it, as it can't be subject to all the conditions hanging out of her mouth daily. I am sure just the basic daily tasks of eating and drinking can be difficult with her tongue hanging out of her mouth. She is a very sweet girl and has a long road of recovery ahead of her. Clarissa stands about 16 hands tall. We will update as she progresses. Please consider making a donation towards Clarissa's Rehabilitation. .
